You've seen traditional board games, and you've also seen video game versions of those same titles. But there is a third category somewhere in the middle. Previously relegated to niche status as VHS tape-controlled board games or Scene It-style DVD games, the marriage of analog and digital gaming is getting its vows renewed due to a major new player: the iPad.

After some smaller companies were given major attention for dabbling in this space during the 2011 holiday season, Hasbro picked up on the trend. They've dipped into their well of classic titles to see what potential can be unlocked from the iPad-on-a-board concept, coining the term "zAPPed" to label this new venture.

First up isThe Game of Life: zAPPed Edition, which will be hitting store shelves at the end of this week in a bit of a pre-Toy Fair surprise. Most products at the trade show are shown in early form and see release later in the year, but Hasbro is kicking off their "zAPPed" product line as we speak.

One of the coolest things I've seen in the world of board games was a version of Settlers of Catan running on the Microsoft Surface. But the only problem is that I don't have $15,000 to drop on a gaming peripheral. Luckily, ePawn understands that, which is why they've created the ePawn Arena: a 26" IPS screen that allows connects to your iPhone or iPad and bring a whole new world to the game table.

The demos they showed us included chess, air hockey, and a rudimentary version of Dungeons & Dragons, but I'm more excited about the possibilities down the road like an electronic version of Arkham Horror that keeps track of all the goings on, Axis & Allies enhanced by sound effects and wartime videos. There's an endless amount of possibilities, and hopefully board game developers will embrace this technology once it comes out later this year.

Soon, Magic: The Gathering fans will get a treat delivered to their App Store of choice: a MTG companion app that serves as a life counter, card database, deck builder, mobile portal for DailyMTG.com, and more. In an announcement posted to that website earlier this morning, Wizard of the Coast writer Monty Ashley detailed the company's plans to roll out a universal iOS app later this month, with an Android port to follow. Best of all, the initial app purchase is free, and the only in-app purchases described were upgrades to the deck building system for future sets.

Angry Birds has come to life as plush toys, board games, a recipe book and even sandals. Now, through a partnership between Rovio and Lappset Group the pissed-off avian egg-layers and their fat, sloppy, green rivals are going to be taking over schoolyards as playground equipment and ready-made “activity parks” as early as next year. Pretty soon you'll be laying track just about wherever you go

Just yesterday, a freshly-discounted Scribblenuats Remix stormed the App Store and de-throned the venerable Angry Birds. Now a new challenger has entered the mix with a strong fan base and similar under-a-buck pricing. Days of Wonder has launched an iPhone version of their hit board game Ticket to Ride, which has already sold over 2 million physical copies and had its iPad version named Apple's Game of the Week. Now the only remaining question is how much mainstream success this hobby gaming hit can have as it attempt to climb the App Store ladder.

Ticket to Ride Pocket includes the standard USA map and three game modes: solo, pass-and-play multiplayer, and local wifi multiplayer. Separate leaderboards for the 2-3 and 4-5 player modes, as well as 20 achievements, are included to spur score-based competition among your friends.
