Doctor-Who_11-doctors

By Steven Smith

OH the hate speech I received when I ranted about the new Doctor not being a woman or a person of color. The jibes, the angst, the sexist/racist rhetoric of “it doesn’t fit the story” or “shouldn’t talent and narrative come first?”, slammed into my twitter feed like millions of voices who were immediately silenced. Now, who the hell am I to voice an opinion, I’ve never watched an episode of "Doctor Who"--“WHAT??!!!” the nerd world squeals with ambiguity, who the hell ARE you? Valid point - but I haven’t watched because I tried and didn’t like it but because I’m afraid once I go down that path forever would it dominate my destiny. I’m certain I would fall in love with Matt Smith. I’ve written before, "Doctor Who" is like getting into Frank Zappa, it’s a huge rabbit hole I don’t want to fall into BUT the Whoniverse is part of my beat so I keep abreast of it’s goings on and I had my fingers crossed the 12th doctor would be big shake-up. It wasn’t and it bothers me.

The excitement I feel for the upcoming Guillermo del Toro film Pacific Rim can only be described as Dark Knight level proportions. I have been jonesing for big metal robots laying the smackdown on these kaiju since I first heard rumblings in the geek world. THEN we got to sit down with the honorable Guillermo himself and the nerd the fudge out at New York Comic-Con. His love for all the old “Man in suit” films from Japan was inescapable. I thought I was a fan before (Hellboy, Hellboy, Hellboy 2) but now I was target locked and ready to rock like a Jaeger.

I love robots. I always have, R2-D2 and C-3P0 are the ones you’d think I would say awakened my love for them but I trace it back to Disney’s The Black Hole. I couldn’t tell you item one what that movie was about but I remember all three robots, V.I.N.CENT, B.O.B., and Maximilian. I’m pretty sure I have a Maximilian action figure floating around somewhere. These robots were the first who made an impression on me when I realized I cared more about the them getting hurt than the human characters, and no, not in a sentimental Ewok way.

I also love me some Kaiju. The Godzilla movies were a staple in my house as well as Gamera. Godzilla versus Mecha-Godzilla is a personal favorite but I also like the first Gorija with his honor Raymond Burr. I knew it was a guy in a suit but my belief was suspended from on high and again, though humans got hurt I always found myself rooting for the monster. This feeling will be tested during Pacific Rim, but not by much. Read More...

Every week, our on-air host Steven Smith weighs in about whatever's bothering him (or inspiring him) in the world of geek! Here's Steven Smith Says:

I saw the trailer for the next Hobbit flick today and I must say I’m intrigued. Upon first viewing 'An Unexpected Journey' I was unexpectedly underwhelmed... But upon later sittings decided it wasn’t half bad. Definitely no 'Fellowship of the Ring'. 'The Desolation of Smaug' looks to try and reach that high 'Two Towers' bar and just might... Except now I know what the dragon looks like.

There’s been many a critique on the length and content of theatrical trailers. We wait for them with baited bad breath to see them, and nowadays find ourselves watching these mini teasings on tiny little screens, not quite the majesty of yesteryear.

Sometimes I would love to see a modern trailer play out like an old narrated type trailer: Read More...

Salutations friends. We just got back from Denver Comic Con and boy are my eyes dry. Damn Denver, is there any moisture or is just on those mountain thingys, wossname, look like big rocks? Whatever.

Denver Con was a rip roaring time. The Geek team did our geek thing, getting magnificent interviews, fun geek footage, and we learned some things. One, Felicia Day is the greatest (we knew that but she proved it again), J. August Richards couldn’t be more tight lipped about who he’s playing in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (not to say we didn’t try), and we all want to be best friends with Phil Lamarr (I mean, who doesn’t?) I was at a party in college when I first learned about gender inequality. I’m a fairly naïve person who thinks the best of people -- with a healthy amount of skepticism -- but for the most part, I believe folks are inherently good. SO, I didn’t understand why the women I was talking about the definition of feminism with started laughing when I answered their question “Do you think women should get paid the same as men?” with, “They don’t?”

may the 4th be with you

By Steven Smith

Did everyone have a great May the 4th? Did we all nerd it up to eleven? Man, I hope so, because though I sometimes feel the fervor of "Star Wars" fandom has reached Trekker-level proportions, I'm a proud fan boy with an original copy of "Splinter of the Mind’s Eye" who never tires of a good Mon Mothma costume. Thought I was going to say Slave Leia, didn’t you? I should have. I really should have.

Recently, on this very website, I expounded the reasons why I'm not a horror movie fan, and surprisingly received a large number of “I’m with you!” responses as opposed to “Hey, weenie, take off your diaper and watch 'Hellraiser'!” So, I though it would be nice to explain another interesting facet about myself. I don’t like sports either.

I kind of liked Damian Wayne. The fact his character lay in the wastelands of continuity for so many years always mystified me. "Son of the Demon" was a great graphic novel (legitimate graphic novel, none of this serialized nonsense use the term for – it’s a comic people, get over yourselves), and "Bride of the Demon" was okay but though paths were laid in the story, they were seldom trodden. Recently I sat down with the incomparable Joe Kelly of Man of Action, who, like many people, was amazed I don’t like horror. This is a common misconception about myself, one that has happened since forever. I recall vividly during my college make-up class how the professor chose me to model all the broken bones, burns, and general disfigurements. I wore them dutifully, holding back my vomit and general nausea. My professor apologized afterwards when the color returned to my cheeks.
